WSA Screening Committee Procedure
July 2017

1. The WSA Screening Committee will be under the direction of the First Vice President as Exhibition Director.

2. The Committee will screen all entries (digital images and selected paintings) submitted to WSA exhibitions for compliance with the prospectus requirements. The complete list of specifications extracted from the current prospectus including the artist’s AGREEMENT statement is attached. When a violation is detected, the Committee will work with the artist to resolve and correct the entry if possible within the prospectus calendar.

3. The Committee will function in two phases: Digital Image Screening and Delivered Paintings Screening.

a. Digital Image Screening: Committee Members will consist of the Entry Chairman, Membership Director and Website Director. They will screen all digital entries against the prospectus requirements summarized as follows:

Eligibility: US resident and current WSA member for National Exhibition
Eligibility: AL resident and current WSA member for Alabama Membership Show Painting Completed Within Two Years of the Exhibition (ongoing screening)
Not Previously Juried Into Any WSA Exhibition
Original Artwork (ongoing screening)
DIGITAL ENTRY PROCEDURES specified in the prospectus

When a violation is detected in the Digital Image Screening phase, the Committee will take the appropriate actions as follows:

The Entry Chairman will give the artist an alternative of resubmitting an image, correcting an error, etc. If the artist cannot accomplish this by the entry deadline of the prospectus, the entry must be rejected. There is no penalty for a rejected digital entry. Entry fees are not refundable.

b. Delivered Paintings Screening at Venue: Committee Members will consist of the Exhibition Director and two other members selected by the First Vice President. They will screen all shipped and hand-delivered paintings against the prospectus specifications summarized as follows:

Eligibility: “Aqua Media” which is defined as watercolor, casein, gouache, egg tempera, and acrylic paints as well as metallic, ink, watercolor crayon and watercolor pencil.
Allowed Support: watercolor paper, watercolor or illustra<on board, Yupo, or synthetic paper, watercolor canvas (without added medium) and clay board (example, Aqua board”). Collage items, if used, must be painted by the artist on one or a combination of the following: watercolor paper, white rice paper without inclusions, white <ssue paper, Yupo or other synthetic papers.
Not Allowed Support: Texture mediums are not permitted. The finished painting cannot be varnished.
Framed Art: Image and frame size, frame material/design, mats, Plexiglas glazing, hanging wire, overall weight.
Painting matches the submitted entry.

When a violation is detected in the Delivered Paintings Screening phase, the Committee will take the appropriate actions as follows:

1) Notify and work with the artist to correct problems, if possible at the venue site; e.g., framing/matting violations. All corrections will be accomplished at the expense of the artist. If the artist will not agree to make the painting conform to the specifications by the given deadline, the painting must be disqualified. The painting will be returned at artist’s expense by the same method it was delivered. A juried alternate will be given the opportunity to replace it.
2) Disqualify any painting in violation which cannot be corrected at the venue; e.g., allowed media, applications, papers, supports. Painting will be returned at artist’s expense by the same method it was delivered.
3) Apply penalties as defined in paragraph 4.

4. For a painting disqualified in the Delivered Paintings Screening phase, penalties will be applied according to the prospectus:

a. Entrants failing to deliver selected works may be denied entry to future exhibitions. The Committee will investigate circumstances and determine extent of penalties to include rescinding signature point awarded for the selected work.
b. AGREEMENT signed by the artist:

“I realize if my work is selected and I withdraw, or it does not meet eligibility requirements set forth in the prospectus including that it has not been exhibited in another WSA show, I will be disqualified immediately. Awards or letters will be rescinded, and I may not be allowed to enter WSA exhibitions for two years.”

5. The “Original Art” specification requires ongoing screening by WSA members and the art community for violations of the following:

• Class or workshop paintings, copies, computer generated art, digital images, prints or reproductions.
• Copies or likeness of another’s work (i.e. painting, drawing, photograph, digital image or prints, etc).
• Original artwork derived from any published source or other artists work.

Note: The Screening Committee is well aware that creativity and inspiration come from viewing artwork of the masters and other artists. However, when artists put themselves into a competition mode by entering into competitive exhibitions, they are expected to utilize their own originality and composition. Therefore, when the originality of a painting is called into question, the Committee will investigate to resolve the issue. If the Committee finds the painting in violation, the painting will be disqualified immediately. If the painting is hanging in the exhibition, the artist will be notified, and the painting will be removed and returned in the manner it was delivered. Penalties will be applied as stated in the AGREEMENT signed by the artist (para 4.b).
